Types of Needlework ...
Counted Cross Stitch - Normally sewn on Aida fabric or evenweave where you can see squares in the fabric made from threads woven horizontally and vertically. The basic stitches are little x's sewn into the fabric squares. Counted cross stitch gets it's name from the fact that the fabric is unprinted, and the stitcher uses a diagram or chart to "count" squares on the fabric to determining where specific stitches should be placed.
Stamped Cross Stitch - Similar to counted cross stitch in that the basic stitches are little x's, this process differs in that the material is printed or "stamped" with the location of stitches eliminating the counting or guesswork. Usually the marks stamped onto the fabric are designed to fade with washing, so be sure not to launder your project until completed!
No Count Cross Stitch - Very similar to counted cross stitch, but without counting! Outlines are already printed onto cross stitch fabric. The chart shows which colors to sew in each area. You make the same basic cross stitches, without having to worry about losing count!
Needlepoint - Basic needlepoint is primarily the process of sewing yarn through the spaces of a loosley woven canvas or mesh. There is nearly an endless variety of stitches and patterns possible. Straight stitches, basketweave, knotted styles ... the list goes on and on.
Crewel Embroidery - A form of embroidery usually done with woolen yarn, onto a plain cloth background. Employing many different kind of embroidery stitches, crewelwork is often beautiful and very graceful in design.
Paternayan(R) Yarn - Originally developed by Harry and karnick Paternayayan for the repair of Persian carpets, Paternayan Persian Yarn has become the standard by which all needlepoint yarns are judged. Made from very high-grade, long stapled New Zealand wool, Paternayan Persian Yarn is very soft and white in its natural state, leading to extremely vivid colors when died. Paternayan's great strength and resilience prevents breaking and fraying during stitching, a quality that separates it from the competition. The yarn is mothproofed, helping to assure that the final product will last through the ages. Look for Paternayan yarn included in most of our JCA and Elsa Williams' Embroidery, Stitchery & Needlepoint kits!
Punch Needle - Punch Needle is a type of needlework that has been around for generations and is quick and easy to do. To create the design, stretch the pre-printed fabric onto an embroidery hoop to keep the fabric taut. Thread your punch needle tool and make thread loops in the fabric with a simple push/pull motion of the needle tool. Repeat the push/pull motion over and over again until you fill in each area of the fabric with color. Easy to follow stitching and finishing instructions are included in each punch needle kit.
